Using broadband in business

Using broadband gives you a high-speed, always-on connection to the Internet. It saves you time when using email and the Web, helping your team to become more productive. And it also allows you to build online links with customers and suppliers, as well as with off-site and home workers. Businesses that currently use dial-up connections and those considering Internet access for the first time should consider getting broadband. As well as being fast it can be highly cost-effective. This guide gives you an overview of how broadband works, how it can benefit your business and the options available to you.

What is broadband?

Although the term broadband is used to describe any high-speed connection to the Internet, there are in fact several different types of broadband connection. All broadband connections are fast - typically ten times faster than a standard telephone dial-up connection to the Internet. This means that, in general, web pages load almost instantly. It also makes sending and receiving large emails far quicker. In addition, broadband connections are always on. So when you want to visit a website, or send an email, you can do it straight away - there's no need to wait for your computer to make a dial-up connection. For many businesses, the time-saving alone makes broadband worth having. Broadband can also give you the opportunity to use the Internet in new ways.

Different types of broadband

There are four main types of broadband connection:
ADSL is the most commonly used. It allows your existing telephone line to be used simultaneously for voice calls and as a high-bandwidth Internet connection. ADSL is available in most parts of the country, but not in some rural areas.
Cable is a widely used alternative (in areas where cable television and telephone services are available).
Satellite connections provide an alternative where ADSL and cable aren't available, but installation and running costs are significantly higher.
Dedicated leased lines may be worth investing in if your business is a very heavy Internet user. Costs are much higher - but this can bringsignificant improvements in performance. Not all of these options will necessarily be available to your business. Most businesses find that ADSL or cable suits their needs.
